23rd July 1916

(Sunday) At sea. Two of the destroyers returned to Scapa during the night to re-fuel and will join us again tomorrow. Fog lasted most of the night and there was not much doing in the sleeping line thanks to the work of the syren. Captain was on the Bridge all night.

Went to Holy Communion. There was no Morning Service as we are in the submarine danger zone and many “look-outs” are required.

Chaplain informs me that we are out looking for a Swedish steamer carrying contraband. It will be some consolation if we can catch her.

It is 7-30 p.m. now and I am wondering if you are at Church. No Evening Service for us tonight, worse luck.

We have stopped and examined some vessels this evening, but have found no contraband yet.
